WHO Faces Major Workforce Cuts Following United States Financial Pullout

This global health organization has announced intentions to reduce its workforce by nearly a fourth – amounting to more than two thousand positions – by the middle of 2026.

Funding Crisis Triggers Major Reorganization

This move follows following the US, formerly the agency's largest donor, pulled out funding earlier this period.

The US government had been contributing approximately eighteen percent of the organization's overall funding, causing a significant financial gap.

Expected Staff Cuts

According to internal estimates, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

This decrease of 2,371 positions comprises job cuts, retirements, and natural attrition.

"This year was among the most difficult in WHO's existence, while we have navigated a challenging but essential journey of prioritization and restructuring," commented the organization's director-general.

Financial Shortfall Persists

The Geneva-based organization currently confronts a funding shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming period, amounting to almost a fourth of its total funding.

This figure represents an reduction from a prior estimated gap of $1.7bn reported in spring.

Not Included Funding

These financial calculations exclude a further $1.1bn in potential contributions from current negotiations with multiple donors.

The representative for the agency noted that the present unsecured portion of the budget is actually smaller than in previous years, attributing this to several factors:

  • A smaller total budget
  • The launch of a fresh fundraising campaign
  • Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees

The restructuring initiative is currently approaching its completion, allowing the organization to move forward with a renewed operational model.
