Every sports executive often states leading a major entity isn't just a nine-to-five job.

Recently named Women's Tennis Association (WTA) leader Valerie Camillo is familiar with dedicated effort from past positions - including one on the commercial board for a tourism firm that operates American celebrated artist Dolly Parton's entertainment venues.

In addition to her input into Parton's business interests, Camillo arrives at the helm at women's tennis with a wealth of experience across sport and entertainment, with past roles in senior leadership posts at the world's premier basketball league, the premier ice hockey competition and Major League Baseball (MLB).

Camillo will begin her tenure at the WTA next month, succeeding the long-serving Steve Simon, whose 10-year tenure concludes upon his departure.

As Camillo begins her new role in mid-November, she will inherit responsibility facing significant matters previously handled by the former leader.

The outgoing leader received acclaim in 2021 for taking a courageous moral stance through pausing WTA events across China.

This action came to concern for Chinese player Peng Shuai, not seen publicly in public for an extended period after accusing a top Chinese official of sexual assault.

But the economic impact from this move were significant.

Simon climbed down from the ethical position last year and resumed operations to the Chinese market, then sought to plug the shortfall through selecting financially strong Middle Eastern country to host for the tour finale.

The move to a region in which female rights have historically been restricted was controversial, and during the tournament once more in Saudi Arabia imminently Saudi involvement will come under more scrutiny.

The WTA agreed a three-year deal with the Saudis - offering historic payouts setting new standards currently - showing Camillo must guide talks regarding future in coming years.

Gulf financial support also provides a significant boost to the WTA's commitment ensuring equal compensation at all combined Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and WTA events within three years and all other major tournaments by 2033.

The potential of the WTA merging business interests alongside the men's tour is still being negotiated, as both organizations clearly seeing the necessity for coordination around broadcast, commercial and marketing arrangements.

The current fragmented landscape regularly leaves supporters and backers confused and disillusioned.

Importantly, the management of the WTA and the ATP was challenged in a lawsuit from the players' union, which has criticised the governing bodies for neglecting competitor needs.

The organization recognizes the clear benefit of collaborating alongside the financially stronger ATP, yet the new chair aims to avoid the WTA losing influence in key negotiations and promotional activities consequently.

Addressing worries about scheduling and athlete exhaustion will also be high on Camillo's agenda.

Since her position requires managing simultaneously athletes and events, she will have to listen to the needs of both parties and find equilibrium between driving revenue and athlete welfare producing those earnings.

Simon relinquished his dual role from combined positions last year - subsequent to tennis legend Martina Navratilova pushing for transformation - and the leadership change finalizes through installing fresh leadership.

Her arrival can be seen to represent continued progress for a transformed period across the tour, aiming to expand its presence in a bustling sports entertainment market.

Camillo is tasked with expanding the audience of women's tennis and may find motivation through direct involvement witnessing Grammy-winning Parton - with her 'Dollywood' theme park and unique products combined with performing career establishing international fame - is heralded as an icon of marketing achievement.

Within athletics, Camillo can apply her experience gained while leading the business operations of the Philadelphia Flyers ice hockey team - including transforming the team's stadium into a world-class stadium - and serving as revenue head of the Washington Nationals sports entity.

Camillo's familiarity regarding business complexity of America's biggest sports - notably approaches to audience expansion and draw financial backing via creativity - is seen as a key reason for choosing her.

The transition to women's tennis comes at "a moment of accelerated growth and opportunity", says the WTA.

Currently represents in female athletics. Income produced across women's sport last year reached record levels and business analysts forecast reaching $2.5bn (£1.8bn) in the coming decade.

Her primary objective will be to ensure the WTA and its leading stars - featuring Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek - obtain meaningful share from the growth.

"Our organization includes the biggest women's sports stars internationally and we are in an enviable position within the industry," the new chair stated.

"Throughout female athletics, funding, viewership and coverage are increasing exponentially.

"Generally the challenge for women's sports involves establishing recognition, gaining audience and engagement," stated the chair.

"Our situation varies somewhat - we've been at this for 50 years plus, we have an incredible legacy, extensive international reach, and some of the most famous, top-compensated female athletes worldwide."
