Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Title Defense with Dramatic Overtime Win
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined the Thunder in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the decisive baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their championship campaign with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, securing the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.
"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the opportunity to get some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his current team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
