Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
