A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
